Car Battery, Alternator and Electrical Service
Your car battery provides electrical current to various parts of your car, the engine, and starter, and is essentially the heartbeat of your vehicle. The last thing you need in the morning (or any time of day!) is having your car battery give out on you. Regular battery checkups are crucial to ensuring the condition of your car's battery and ensuring you get to work on time!
Vehicle batteries are electrochemical calls that produce electricity via a chemical reaction inside the battery. These electrochemical cells are manufactured from metal lead and lead oxide electrodes which are dipped in weak sulfuric acid. The cells are then hooked together to provide approximately twelve volts of electrical output from the battery. Vehicle batteries are rechargeable and are recharged by the vehicle's alternator, but still need to be replaced periodically.
Symptoms of battery failure
It is important to have your car battery tested periodically in order to determine how well it is performing. When you have your car battery tested at Bustard Chrysler in Waterloo, one of our technicians will use a voltmeter to measure how much voltage the battery is outputting, both with and without electrical load. If the battery drops far below 12 volts without load, this is an indication that the battery is not performing well. One reason your battery may be performing poorly is called sulfation. Sulfation occurs when lead sulfate gets crystallized inside the battery during normal operation and causes the battery to wear out.
Aside from dips in voltage output, another sign that your vehicle's battery needs to be replaced is a cracked outer case. This causes the electrolyte stored inside to be exposed to the atmosphere, degrading the battery's inner components.
There is no fixed rule or time when it comes to battery replacement, and so the timing of replacement depends on a few things:
- How heavily the battery is used
- The quality of your battery
- The weather conditions you use your vehicle in (cold conditions are harder on batteries)
- How much maintenance you have had done on your battery
In general, experts recommend that your battery be replaced every 3-4 years, however you should have it checked periodically (we'll do it for FREE at Bustard Chrysler in Waterloo!) in order to ensure it is in optimal working condition. If you need to have your battery checked, or changed, do not hesitate to contact the service department here at Bustard Chrysler in Waterloo!
