Getting your car ready for winter

Is Your Car Ready for the Winter Season?

It’s getting colder by the day, and we all know those impending subzero temperatures can be problematic for your car. Seasonal changes significantly impact car performance and so there are a number of steps you should take in order to get your car ready for winter!

Have your mechanic check the following items:

Battery and Charging System

One of the first steps you should take to get your car ready for winter is to have your battery and charging system tested by a trained technician. Here at Bustard Chrysler we offer our customers free battery testing for peace of mind, and in the unfortunate situation that you need a new battery, we offer Mopar or Magnetti Marelli batteries to suit your car – no matter the make or model!

 Cooling System

Another important thing to take care of when getting your car ready for winter is to have your car’s cooling system flushed and refilled according to manufacturer’s specifications. The level, condition, and concentration of coolant, as well as the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be periodically checked by a trained technician.

Tire type, Tread, and Pressure

In regions with fierce winter weather like we have here in Waterloo, installing snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best traction and ensure the safety of you and your passengers. Provided they are in optimal condition with decent tire tread depth, all season tires perform well in light to moderate snow conditions. However they are not well suited for the severe weather we encounter here in Waterloo. Here at Bustard Chrysler in Waterloo, we offer a wide range of tires to suit the needs of every car and driving style. Use our handy Tire Locator to find the right tires for your car, or call our parts department at (519) 884-9570.

Replace your tires if they have less than 3/32 inches of tread. Uneven tire wear may indicate issues with your car’s alignment, wheel balance, and suspension.

Make sure you regularly check tire pressure during the fall and winter months. Tire pressure drops with temperature and so it is that much more important to monitor tire inflation during the winter season. You can find the proper tire pressure level  in your owner’s manual or a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb.

Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid

Your wiper blades should completely clean the glass with every swipe. Replace your blades if they leave streaks or missed spots. Refill your washer fluid with winter washer fluid during the winter months to keep it from freezing.

Preparing your car for cold conditions is imperative to ensure your safety, your passengers’ safety, and the safety of those around you. Taking the time to prepare for winter driving conditions is vital in areas like Waterloo Region where we face a particularly fierce winter. If you have any questions about getting your car ready for winter, or would like to order parts or book a service appointment on your car, don’t hesitate to contact Bustard Chrysler in Waterloo at (519) 884-9570, or book your appointment online HERE.
