Getting your vehicle ready for Spring

Getting your vehicle ready for Spring

The green season is upon us! We all know that winter doesn't treat our vehicles particularly well, so its definitely in your best interest to perform some general Spring maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly during the warmer months! Here are some ways you can get your vehicle ready for the green season:

Wash the underbody

It's super important to clean up your vehicle's undercarriage (and of course the rest of it!) when winter ends. Having salt built up on the undercarriage can corrode your vehicle's mechanical components. You can either do this yourself or have it done at your local car detailing center (our Fine Details department would be happy to help you out!). If you're looking to do it yourself, cleaning salt from your vehicle's undercarriage is as simple as using a garden hose on the highest possible setting to loosen mud, salt and grime.

Clean your vehicle inside and out

Salt and sand can cause significant damage to your car's paint and interior. It's a good idea to give your vehicle a thorough cleaning and wax once winter is over. The bottom of your doors should be scrubbed to remove grime, and your window channels should be cleaned in order to prevent damage to your windows. Using a steam cleaner to remove salt from your vehicle's interior will prevent salt from breaking down
fabrics, as well as avoiding the rips and tears that can result from feet grinding salt into the fabric!

Check your tire pressure

Tire pressure changes with the weather so its super important to check your tire pressure after significant weather changes. Never exceed the tire pressure recommended in your vehicle's service manual. You don't want to under- or over-inflate your tires too much, or you might find them wearing in the middles (over inflation) or along the edges (under inflation).

Check your wiper blades

Wiper blades usually need to be changed every six months to a year, and the winter months generally cause a bit more wear and tear on your blades due to recurrent snow and ice buildup. Come springtime, you'll want to make sure the blades aren't dried out, and take a look to ensure they are still making full contact with your window!

Rotate your tires

You should have your tires rotated every 5, 000 - 10, 000 kms. This will increase your tire's tread life. We usually recommend having your tires rotated every time you have your oil changed. Now, we all know that Kitchener-Waterloo has a big pothole problem during the spring months due to shifting pavement, and it's definitely in your best interest to have your tires aligned close to the end of spring just in case they get thrown off balance by uneven pavement.

Top off fluids

Winter weather can cause some fluids to deplete faster than usual, particularly windshield washer fluid, so it's a good idea to check all your fluids to make sure they are full. While we would be happy to do this when your vehicle is in for service, it's always a good idea to check your fluids between service intervals. You can do this by checking each fluid bottle dipstick or fill line. Most fluids should last between service appointments, but with the weather we experience in Kitchener-Waterloo and Listowel during the winter, chances are that your windshield washer fluid will run out!

We highly recommend bringing your vehicle in for a Peace of Mind inspection after the cold season just to ensure that all components are functioning properly. You can contact our service department at (519) 884-9570 to book your appointment, or you can book your appointment on our website HERE.
