Spring cleaning tips from Bustard's Fine Details Department

Spring cleaning tips from Bustard's Fine Details Department

It's springtime and that means it's time to clean all of the winter crud off your car! This will ensure it's longevity and keep it looking beautiful during the warmer months. We've got some great tips on cleaning your car's interior and exterior from Bustard Chrysler's Fine Details Department!

Cleaning the Interior

First things first, you'll want to vacuum down your car's interior to remove large dirt particles which will make shampooing easier and more effective. Before you shampoo your seats, you'll want too ensure that you have removed all winter salt residue. This is best done with boiling water and a bristle brush. When it comes time to shampoo your seats, work your cleaning solution into a foamy, cappuccino-like lather. This will prevent you from over-applying cleaner, and keep your upholstery from becoming too wet. Use a wash mitt to apply the foam, and focus on cleaning one area at a time so that you don't miss any spots.

Interior plastics can be cleaned with a mild, all-purpose cleaner and a soft sponge. Our team likes to use a q-tip or thin paint brush to get those hard-to-reach places - hence the term "detailing!" There are lots of tiny grooves that can be easily missed with a sponge. A microfiber towel can be used to wipe the plastics dry after cleaning and to remove excess cleaning product.

Cleaning the Exterior

Two super important tips from the pros here at Fine Details:

  1. Use microfibre mitts to hand wash your vehicle; household towels can sometimes scratch your car's exterior
  2. Don't use household soap because it is solvent-based and contains degreasers which may damage your car's paint job by stripping polymers off the paint surface. Using dishwashing detergent is one of the worst things you can do because it accelerates the oxidation process.

A few times a year, you'll want to apply some wax after you wash your car. Most cars are manufactured with a clear cost over the paint, which takes a lot of environmental abuse. Scratches and oxidation often build up on the surface of the clear coat, which can cause the surface to get hazy and make it less shiny. Waxing will reduce wear on the clear coat and make your car appear shinier!
