Stellantis Intensifies Electrification

Stellantis Intensifies Electrification

Stellantis is one of the world's leading automakers, responsible for 14 iconic brands across the globe. It recently announced its latest electrification plans, which includes continuing to be the automotive efficiency frontrunner.

Customer-Focused Electrification

Stellantis recognizes that one-size-does-not-fit-all in terms of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Each of its brands is committed to offering best-in-class EVs in a way that fits into and enhances the brand's DNA. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram are the four best known Stellantis brands in Canada and North America.

Chrysler's electrification approach is summed up in the phrase "Clean Technology for a New Generation of Families." Many families running errands and kids to practices would benefit from a BEV, but long trips to visit grandparents or go on vacation might turn them off from the possibility of an EV. With Stellantis's focus on longer driving ranges, Chrysler's vehicles would the perfect family cars.

Dodge's electrification tagline is "Tear Up the Streets...Not the Planet," and it seems evident that the Dodge EVs will focus on providing top-of-the-line horsepower and torque versus other sports cars in the class.

Jeep focuses electrification on "Zero Emission Freedom." It just makes sense that a brand built upon getting people to explore the great outdoors would ensure that the environment would not be harmed by its vehicles.

Ram's electrification strategy is focusing on being a brand "Built to Serve a Sustainable Planet." Electric pick-up trucks are quickly coming onto the scene, and Ram is being proactive is combining towing and hauling capability with electrification.

Battery-Electric Vehicles

Stellantis has laid out its challenges and goals for electrification over the coming years. Driving range and rapid recharges are the main considerations of drivers wanting to switch to BEVs, and they are often the biggest roadblocks. Stellantis will create BEVs that will deliver driving ranges between 500-800km and with class-leading charging capability of 32km per minute. With these stats, switching to a fully electric vehicle will not be prohibitive for people who drive a lot.

Affordability is also a priority at Stellantis as BEVs often cost thousands more than their gas-powered counterparts. Even with federal and provincial rebates and savings, drivers are paying more out of pocket for a model with an electric battery instead of an internal combustion engine. For that reason, Stellantis is targeting the total cost of ownership of EVs to be equivalent to internal combustion engine vehicles by 2026.

Strategy Execution

For Stellantis to execute their electrification strategy and become the market leader in low-emission vehicles, they must pour money into a new part of their business. To that end, Stellantis plans to invest more than $40 billion through 2025 in electrification and software development. With this investment, the company is targeting over 70 percent of sales in Europe and over 40 percent of sales in the United States to be low-emission vehicles by 2030.
