Things to do in Waterloo in April

Saturday, April 7: Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

We’ve been waiting for it all year, and the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival takes place this weekend! This is the 54th year they have ran this festival, and it has always been a hit with almost 70,000 people coming each year. Get that sweet tooth taken care of at the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, where you can enjoy amazing maple syrup, pancakes, apple fritters, and all sorts of baked goods! There will be live local performers present, and 91.5 The Beat will be broadcasting for your musical enjoyment. There are tons of great kids’ activities (pony rides, anyone?!), and so much more for people of all ages to enjoy! Check out the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival website for a full list of all the fun happening this Saturday. It’s an amazing event, and a must-attend for locals and people far and wide. The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival takes place at 24 Church Street West Elmira on Saturday, April 7th, beginning at 7:00 am and running through until 4:00 pm.
 
No way to get to the Maple Syrup Festival? Don’t fret! The Waterloo Central Railway has 4 shuttle trains running from the St. Jacob’s Market Star5tion at 330 Farmer’s Market Rd. in Waterloo to the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. Once you get to Elmira, a wagon will take you from the Elmira Train Shop right to the middle of the action, and it’s part of the train ticket at no extra cost! You can get your all ages pass for $19.99. Children under one year old ride for free! You can order your tickets on the Waterloo Central Railway site.
 

 

Saturday, April 7: Matt Weidinger Performance

After you get your sweet tooth fix at the Elmira Syrup Festival head on over to Descendants Beer and Beverage Company and see Matt Weidinger perform live. Matt is an extremely talented 24 year old from Kitchener who uses multiple instruments, including piano and guitar to play incredible blues. He always puts on a great show and really captivates his audience at every performance. This event takes place at Descendents Beer and Beverage Company at 319 Victoria Street North on April 7th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Sunday, April 8, 2018: Famjam Movie Trivia: Sandlot

Sundays are family day at Descendants Beer and Beverage Co. Every Sunday, join Descendants for FamJam Movie Trivia beginning at 11:30 AM. Each week, enjoy a movie with your family while the little ones fill out an age appropriate trivia sheet or colouring page to complete as they watch! At the end of the movie, the kiddies can submit their sheet for a chance to win fun prizes!

Thursday, April 12: Beekeeping 101 Lunchtime Lounge

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to raise a bee colony on your own property? Ever wanted to produce your own honey? Join beekeeper Zoran Jovkovic at the Homer Watson House and Gallery who will discuss what it takes to start up as a beekeeper! Zoran has practised as a Beekeeper in Southern Ontario for over five years. Trained as a veterinarian, he understands just how important bees are both for humans and Mother Nature!
 
This event takes place at the Homer Watson House and Gallery at 1754 Old Mmill Road in Kitchener on April 12th from noon until 1:00 pm. Admission is $10 per person, or free for those who hold a valid membership to the House. Find more info on the Homer Watson House and Gallery site.
 

 

Friday, April 13: Scrapfest in Kitchener

Scrapfest in Kitchener is the largest event in Ontario for scrapbookers, cardmakers, stampers, and mixed media artists. Check out the newest products from a variety of Exhibitors, and learn cool new techniques through demonstrations and inspirational workshops led by internationally recognized Canadian talent. Scrapfest is also hosting a 28 hour Crop, which gives participants a chance to work on their own projects in a fun and energetic atmosphere. For more information, check out the Scrapfest website.
 
This event takes place at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium at 400 East Ave., Kitchener. The event begins at 4:00 pm on Friday, April 13th, and runs through until Saturday, April 14th at 5:00 pm. Passes begin at $11 in advance, and $12 at the door, and VIP passes are available.
 

Wednesday, April 18: Beer + Ukulele at THEMUSEUM

THEMUSEUM never fails to present fun and unique events! At Beer + Ukelele at THEMUSEUM, you’ll get the chance to learn how to play a Ukulele, while also drinking beer! Those two things must mix well! For the $60.00 admission cost, you get your very own Ukulele to take home, plus a pint of beer. If you don’t know how play the Ukulele but have always wanted to learn, this is a great event for you! The wonderful teachers over at Folkway Music will teach you how to properly use this instrument, and you will have an opportunity to learn with other Ukulele enthusiasts! We think this event will be a ton of fun! Who doesn’t want to try learning a Ukulele?

Friday, April 20: Birdhouse Art Jam

The Central Frederick Neighbourhood Association is putting up 46 birdhouses on the side of the shed on Weber Park. They’re looking for help to spice up those 46 Birdhouses, and they want the whole community to get involved! No special skills are required, and the Organization will be supplying the crafts necessary to complete the job – unless of course you birdhouse aficionados want to bring along your own materials! This is a great, family-friendly way to spend a Friday night, and you’ll have a chance to release that creativity you’ve kept bottled up and make lives better for neighborhood birds! This event is will take place in the multipurpose room on the 2nd floor of the Downtown Community Centre 35B Weber St. West Kitchener, Ontario from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Thursday, April 24: David Chilton Speaking Presentation

If you’ve ever watched Dragons’ Den you’ll know who David Chilton is! He’ll be presenting at Bingemans’ Fairgrounds for the “She Shares” event, organized by the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation. This event will cost $50.00 per ticket. The cost of your individual ticket includes breakfast and a copy of David Chilton’s recent book “The Wealthy Barber Returns”. This will be an educational event focused on bettering your personal financial situation, and your life. It’s a great chance to get some solid advice from an extremely successful entrepreneur and financial advisor.
 
This event takes place on April 24th from 7:00 am to 9:00. Tickets are $50 and you can buy your tickets on the Support St. Mary’s website.
 

Thursday, April 26: Fashion For Life White Party

Fashion for Life is the Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s annual fundraising event in support of the CMH Beast Reconstruction Initiative which provides Breast Reconstruction for patients who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Hosted by Gemini Models, Fashion for Life is an annual fashion show. Proceeds will help fund specialized operating room equipment such as microscopes, tissue blood supply analyzer, specialized instruments and training for support staff. The 2017 event surpassed the $330, 000 fundraising mark and this year’s show is sure to have a huge impact on women’s lives in the region! You can buy tickets on the Fashion for Life website for $75 + HST per person HERE. Your ticket includes passed hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Wildcraft Catering plus exclusive fashion show access! VIP lounges are also available.

Sunday, April 29: Waterloo Marathon Ed Whitlock Half Marathon

Looking for a good marathon to kick start the better weather season? The Ed Whitlock Waterloo Half Marathon is a great way to start the season off! This marathon is hosted by St. John's Ambulance, and all of the funds raised will support St. John’s Ambulance in their mission to enhance health, safety, and quality of life through training and community service. The event will be hosted at Bechtel Park Waterloo, you can purchase tickets for $85.00 and that entry fee includes a T-shirt, hand-made medallion, massage, and post race refreshments. This is a great event, for a good cause, and is a great way to start of the running season!
 
This marathon takes off from Bechtel Park in Waterloo, located at 185 Bridge St in Waterloo. The Earlybird registration fee is only $85, and includes a hand-made clay medallion, massage, and post-race refreshments. Sunday, April 29: Play with Clay at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery

“Play with Clay” presented by the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is an open clay studio experience for people of all ages. Whether or not you have experience making items out of clay, Play with Clay is a fantastic, fun event the whole family can enjoy! Over two Sundays (April 29th and May 13th) you make an object out of clay and paint it with a glaze. It is then fired in the CCGG kiln and the following Sunday you’ll pick up your unique, colourful object!
